Brotherment

There are no specific words in Anglish to identify lesbians and gays. The gender-neutral term is Hellaniste. Hellanistes engage in the sexual practices of ancient Hellas, where stoic philosophy and Logism were born. Hellanistes pursue same-sex relationships, sometimes with younger partners, as seen in history of Hellas. However, the age of consent in the Empire is seventeen, and there are strict laws forbidding sexual relationships between adults and minors.
Sanctioned gay marriage does not exist. Same-sex couples are discouraged by the Church and State, who want to expand the population. However, the Church will perform a brotherment or sisterment ceremony for unmarried soldiers or nobles. This ceremony is a contract that allows the couple to share and inherit property. And importantly, it allows them to pass titles down to any children with their blood who may be illegitimate but have been claimed. It is not unusual for such couples to contract a surrogate for that purpose. Sometimes, these unions between same-sex couples are non-sexual, and are solely to establish inheritance, but often it is cover for a sexual relationship. If a person is in a brotherment with someone, their partner is called a juris frater, or frater. If in a sisterment they are a juris soror, or soror.
